About the album
Everywhere the Truth Rushes In presents two never-before-recorded chamber pieces by the Texas-based composer Kory Reeder in authoritative recordings by ensembles led by Reeder himself.
The pieces on the album are situated in an emotional state characterized by stillness, austerity, long silences, and a heightened momentary focus on the details and immediacy of sounds. At the same time, the abstract musical material never leads to breaking the lyricism and connective fabric of the music. In Reeder's own words: "I sought to probe the limits of what constituted musical connectivity, or more abstractly: by asking what shape lacks form, how can small gestures or small changes betray a sense of large-scale formal structures while punctuated by expanses of silence, but still retain the cohesion as a single work”.
The first track, Everywhere the Truth Rushes In, is a 25-minute string quartet performed by Texas-based string players Joseph Reding, (violin), Jacob Cortez, (violin), Amanda Hamilton, (viola), and Nico Clark (cello). Brightly shining, perhaps celestial, sonorities are punctuated by silences to create a form of both ecstatic surrendering and silent illumination.
In the second piece, the 28-minute The Way I Saw Them Turning, Reeder plays the piano together with flutist Alaina Clarice, viola performer Kathleen Crabtree, and vocalist Nicole Barbeau, who performs a terse, poetic text written by Reeder. Together, they create a piece of both deep, personal introspection and lyrical declaration.
